Since 1977, Gary Pitchlynn (Choctaw) has been a stalwart advocate for tribal rights, nations, and their members. With All Rise!, he continues that legacy while mentoring the next generation of legal minds passionate about defending Indian Country. Gary's expertise isn't just broad; it's deep. He has been widely recognized for his specialty in Indian Gaming law. In fact, Gary met our Executive Director, Austin R. Vance (Southern Cheyenne – Non-Enrollee), as a student in his Indian Gaming course at theUniversity of Oklahoma College of Law. From there, Gary hired Austin as a law clerk.
During that time, Gary watched Austin master Indian law. Austin won the National Indian Law Moot Court Competition in 2016 (NNALSA); he earned the top grades in Federal Indian Law and Native American Natural Resources; he was elected the Editor-in-Chief of the American Indian Law Review by his peers; and, he became the youngest adjunct lecturer at the University of Oklahoma College of Law at the age of 26, teaching various classes in Indian law. Since graduating from law school, Austin has provided legal representation to the majority of the Oklahoma tribes in one capacity or another. Most recently, Austin spent half a decade under the mentorship of the first enrolled Native American to be appointed to the Federal bench, Judge Michael Burrage. Through his work at Whitten Burrage, Austin recovered millions for tribes through litigation and saved tribes even more through his general counsel services.
Austin, in turn, met Jeremy E. Otis while taking part in a Human Rights Clinic in Lima, Peru, where they authored an investigative report to the United Nations on the mistreatment of indigenous populations of the Amazon. The two then worked together at Oklahoma Indian Legal Services, Inc., representing low-income tribal members in tribal and state courts. And, finally, Ryan Sailors joins All Rise! after being coached by Austin while competing for the University of Oklahoma NNALSA Indian Law Moot Court Competition. Ryan is excited to return to Indian law with All Rise!.
